Forty minutes out of Tashkent the road begins to climb, and everything you thought you knew about Uzbekistan quietly rearranges itself. The poplars thin out. The air drops ten degrees. Then the valley opens and there it is — Charvak, a reservoir the colour of turquoise glass held in a bowl of grey rock, with the shoulder of Big Chimgan standing some 3,300 metres above the far shore. You came for domes and minarets. Nobody warned you there were mountains.
This is the Uzbekistan that almost never makes the brochure cover, and in September and October it is at its most generous: dry air, walnut and juniper turning gold on the slopes, and the whole Western Tien Shan in that clear, unhurried autumn light. For travellers who like their culture with a pair of walking boots in the boot of the car, it may be the best two days you can add to a Silk Road itinerary.
Wandern in Usbekistan: the Western Tien Shan, one hour from the capital
The range above Tashkent sits inside Ugam-Chatkal National Park, and the Uzbek slice of the Western Tien Shan carries UNESCO World Heritage status as part of a transboundary listing shared with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. You do not need to be a mountaineer to feel it. At Chimgan, an old chairlift creaks up roughly two kilometres of hillside to around 2,000 metres, and a cable car continues to the Kumbel ridge at about 2,300 metres, where the view swings open across rocky spurs to Big Chimgan itself.
A little further along the same valley, Amirsoy — the largest mountain resort in the country — lifts you by gondola to about 2,290 metres and alpine meadows that would not look out of place in Tyrol. In winter it is Uzbekistan's ski address. In autumn it is a place to walk ridgelines, drink tea on a terrace, and watch the light move across the water at Charvak below.
Why German-speaking travellers are rewriting the Usbekistan Rundreise
The classic Studienreise through Uzbekistan runs Tashkent — Khiva — Bukhara — Samarkand, and it is classic for good reason: the Silk Road cities are among the most complete medieval urban ensembles anywhere, and several carry UNESCO World Heritage protection. But travellers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland tend to want one more thing that the standard circuit rarely delivers — landscape, on foot, at their own pace.
That is where the mountains earn their place. Citizens of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, along with more than ninety other nationalities, enter Uzbekistan visa-free, so extending a trip is a matter of days on the calendar rather than paperwork. Add two nights above Tashkent at the start or the end, and the journey suddenly has both halves: the tiled, human, market-loud world of Samarkand and Bukhara, and the cold clean air of the Tien Shan.
The golden season: September and October on the Silk Road
Autumn is not a compromise season in Uzbekistan, it is the season. September days settle at roughly 22-28°C and October at about 18-22°C — warm enough for long walking, cool enough that the Registan does not shimmer. The summer humidity is gone. The crowds of the spring high season have thinned.
And the country is eating. This is harvest: Siab Bazaar in Samarkand and Chorsu in Tashkent overflow with melons so fragrant you smell the stall before you see it, with grapes, pomegranates, new walnuts and mountains of dried apricots. A morning in the bazaar and an afternoon on a ridge above Charvak is, we would argue, the most complete day Uzbekistan can give you.
How to build the trip — and why 2026 is the year
Uzbekistan is having a record year: the country's Tourism Committee is projecting around 12 million visitors in 2026, and the nation's airports handled 8.15 million passengers in the first half of the year alone, roughly 16% more than the same period in 2025. Afrosiyob high-speed trains link Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara in hours rather than half-days, which is precisely what makes a two-day mountain detour affordable in time.
GoUzbekistan is a licensed Uzbek tour operator (tour-operator licence No. 662280, Committee for Tourism Development), operated by Lochin Express Plyus LLC and run by a team that has been organising travel here since 2007. We build the mountain days properly — the right trailheads for your fitness, the right season, drivers who know the Charvak road, and a base in Tashkent that lets you leave early and come back to a proper dinner.
Tell us how you like to travel and we will draw the route around it: create your own custom tour, or explore our tours to see how the mountains fit alongside Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva.
