Eight Hours from Shanghai: Samarkand Is Now One Flight Away

There is a moment, somewhere over the Tian Shan, when the cabin lights dim and the map on the seat-back screen shows a name that has lived in Chinese memory for two thousand years: Samarkand. Eight hours after leaving Shanghai, you step out into dry, apricot-coloured light — and the road that Zhang Qian opened, that carried silk west and glass, horses and melons east, is simply outside the airport door.

For most of the last century that road was a story in a textbook. In 2026 it is a boarding pass. New direct flights, a mutual visa-free agreement and a high-speed railway across Uzbekistan have quietly turned the heart of the Silk Road into one of the easiest long-haul journeys a Chinese traveller can make.

Direct flights from China to Uzbekistan: Shanghai, Guangzhou, Urumqi

In March 2026 China Eastern opened a direct route between Shanghai Pudong and Tashkent, flying four round trips a week with a flight time of roughly eight hours. In late May, Uzbekistan Airways added a weekly Tashkent–Guangzhou service, putting southern China on the map for the first time. Air China already links Urumqi and Tashkent, a hop of only a few hours for travellers in Xinjiang.

What this means in practice is that a Silk Road trip no longer costs you two days of transits through a Gulf hub. You leave in the evening, you sleep, and you wake up where the caravans used to unload.

Visa-free for Chinese passport holders — 30 days, no paperwork

Since 1 June 2025 a mutual visa-exemption agreement has been in force between Uzbekistan and China. Holders of ordinary Chinese passports can enter Uzbekistan without a visa for up to 30 days per visit, with a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period, for tourism and business travel. No application, no fee, no embassy appointment — you book the flight and you go.

That single change has done more for Chinese arrivals than any advertising campaign. Uzbekistan received more than 7.7 million foreign visitors in the first seven months of 2026, over a fifth more than the same period a year earlier, and Chinese travellers are among the fastest-growing groups in that number.

Where the Han envoys went: Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva by high-speed rail

From Tashkent, the Afrosiyob high-speed train reaches Samarkand in about two hours. You will be at the Registan by afternoon — three madrasahs facing one another across a square of star-tiled portals, gold-leaf ceilings and blue domes that photographs consistently fail to prepare anyone for. Nearby, the Afrasiab murals, painted in the seventh century, show foreign envoys bearing silk cocoons: proof, in pigment, that this exchange is not a marketing idea but a shared history.

Then Khiva, the walled desert city of Khorezm, small enough to circle on foot at sunrise and old enough to make you whisper.

Why autumn 2026 is the season — and why to book early

September to mid-November is Uzbekistan's finest travelling weather: 20–28°C days, cold-crisp mornings, and the markets stacked with pomegranates, melons, figs and new-season grapes. It is also the season everyone else has discovered. The best courtyard hotels in Bukhara and Samarkand and the Chinese-speaking guides — a small, genuinely limited group — are booked weeks in advance for the autumn peak and around the National Day holiday.
