Where Nobody Asks You to Translate: Uzbekistan for the Autumn Holidays

There is a moment on the first evening in Samarkand that Russian-speaking travellers describe almost identically. You sit down in a courtyard under a vine. Someone splits a pomegranate onto a plate. Tea arrives before you order it. And then the waiter answers you in Russian, the guide jokes in Russian, and the woman selling dried apricots at Siab Bazaar corrects your pronunciation — in Russian. You are a long way from home, and not once have you had to point at a menu.

That single fact changes what a holiday feels like when you are travelling with children, or with parents who are past the age of deciphering airport signage.

Uzbekistan tours with no visa and no language barrier

Citizens of Russia and most CIS countries enter Uzbekistan without a visa — no consulate, no forms, no waiting. It shows in the traffic. Between January and July 2026 Uzbekistan received 7,749,308 foreign visitors, 22.6% more than a year earlier, and Russia ranked fourth among all source markets with 710,824 travellers, behind only the three neighbouring Central Asian republics.

The practical effect is that the country is set up for you. Menus, museum labels and railway announcements are routinely trilingual. Guides switch between Russian, Uzbek and English without effort. Pharmacies understand what you are asking for. For families, that removes the invisible tax that foreign travel usually charges.

Autumn school holidays on the Silk Road

The last week of October is the sweet spot. Daytime temperatures sit around 20-25°C, the fierce summer light softens, and the harvest is everywhere: grapes drying on flat roofs, pomegranates stacked in pyramids, the last melons of the year cut open at the roadside.

A first trip almost always runs Tashkent - Samarkand - Bukhara. Children remember three things from it, reliably: standing in the middle of the Registan at dusk while the tilework goes from turquoise to violet; climbing the narrow stair of a Bukhara minaret; and a night in a yurt camp by Lake Aydarkul, where the camels are real, the fire is real, and the sky has more stars in it than anyone at home will believe. Add Khiva if you have nine days rather than six.

Direct flights from Russia and the CIS, and a fast train between the cities

Getting here has quietly become easy. Direct flights link Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara with cities across Russia and the CIS, operated by both Russian and Uzbek carriers, and in September 2026 Centrum Air added services from Perm, Yekaterinburg and Ufa to a network that already included Vladivostok and Krasnodar. From most of European Russia, Tashkent is a four-to-five-hour flight — shorter than many domestic routes.

Inside the country, the Afrosiyob high-speed train covers Tashkent to Samarkand in a little over two hours, seated, with a table and a window full of cotton fields. Nobody in your family has to sit in a minibus for a day.

What autumn tastes like here

Plov cooked over wood in a cauldron the size of a bathtub, eaten at noon because that is when Uzbeks eat it. Non bread stamped with a pattern and pulled hot out of the tandyr. Shashlik, samsa, dill-heavy salads, honeydew melon so cold it aches. At Chorsu Bazaar in Tashkent the spice traders will make you taste things you did not order, and refuse payment for the tasting. This is a country where feeding a guest is a matter of pride, and where children are treated as everybody's children.
