Sleep Where the Caravans Slept: Bukhara Courtyard Houses and Caravanserai Nights

At about nine in the evening in Bukhara, the day's heat lets go of the stone and the old town starts to breathe. You push open a wooden door in a lane barely wide enough for two people, and the lane turns out to have been hiding a courtyard: a mulberry tree, a carved ganch niche, a low table with tea on it, and four walls of blue-painted timber that have been standing since before your country's oldest hotel was built. There is no lobby. There is no lift. Somebody's grandmother's house has become the best night of your trip.

This is what people mean when they say Bukhara is different. You do not visit the Silk Road here. You sleep inside it.

What a Silk Road Caravanserai Actually Was — and What It Is Now

For a thousand years, every trading city on the Silk Road ran on the same simple machine: a square building with a single guarded gate, storerooms on the ground floor for silk, spice, indigo and paper, small rooms above for the men who owned them, and a courtyard in the middle where camels knelt. That was a caravanserai. Bukhara had dozens. Several still stand, along with the covered trading domes — Toqi Zargaron for the jewellers, Toqi Telpak Furushon for the hat sellers — where the same goods are still sold under the same brickwork.

Some have been carefully converted into small hotels. Others have become workshops, teahouses and carpet galleries. Either way, the geometry is unchanged: you walk in through one door and the noise of the twenty-first century stays outside.

Where to Stay in Bukhara: Courtyard House or Modern Comfort

Travellers usually choose between two very different nights, and the honest answer is that most trips should include both.

A restored merchant house in the old town — often nineteenth-century, family-run, ten or twelve rooms around a courtyard — gives you atmosphere that no international chain can manufacture: breakfast under the mulberry tree, the call to prayer at dawn, the Lyabi-Hauz pool three minutes' walk away. Rooms can be small and stairs can be steep. That is the trade.

A modern hotel gives you a lift, a proper bathroom, reliable air conditioning and space for luggage after a long train day. GoUzbekistan is based in Bukhara and operates its own three-star property, Dendi Plaza Hotel, alongside a 500-capacity event venue and three catering brigades — which is why we can be blunt with clients about which hotel actually suits which traveller, rather than selling whatever has availability.

The Bukhara Day That Earns the Night

Start before eight, when the Poi-Kalyan ensemble is empty and the Kalyan Minaret throws its shadow across the whole square. Mid-morning, the Ark fortress and the Bolo-Hauz mosque with its slender wooden columns doubled in the water. Afternoon, the Chor Minor and its four turquoise turrets in the back lanes, and then the trading domes — slowly, because the point is the conversation, not the purchase.

Eat plov at lunch, not dinner. That is the local rule, and locals are right.

Autumn Is the Season — and the Best Rooms Book Early

Uzbekistan received more than 7.7 million foreign visitors between January and July 2026, 22.6% more than a year earlier, and September to November is the peak of the peak: warm days, cool nights, pomegranates and melons stacked in the bazaars. Uzbekistan is visa-free for citizens of more than 90 countries, and the Afrosiyob high-speed train puts Bukhara within a comfortable morning of Samarkand and Tashkent. The best courtyard houses in Bukhara have twelve rooms, not four hundred. They sell out first.

GoUzbekistan is a licensed tour operator (licence No. 662280, Committee for Tourism Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan), operating from Bukhara since 2007 and building private Silk Road journeys across Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva — with the hotels chosen room by room rather than by star rating.
