Can you still bathe in a medieval hammam in Uzbekistan? Yes. In Bukhara, the Bozori Kord hammam beside the Toki Telpak Furushon trading dome is a centuries-old bathhouse that is still in everyday use, and the women-only Kunjak hammam near the Kalon Minaret keeps the same ritual alive. For travellers who know the baños árabes of Andalusia, this is the same idea — not as a museum, but as a living habit.
Imagine the end of an October day in Bukhara. The light has turned the brick of the old town honey-gold, your legs ache from the lanes between the domes, and a low doorway leads you down into warm darkness. Steam rises from a stone basin. Water echoes under a vaulted ceiling. Someone hands you a cup of green tea. This is not a spa invented for tourists — it is how Bukhara has washed, talked and rested for generations.
Bukhara hammam: what makes Bozori Kord special
Bozori Kord stands next to Toki Telpak Furushon, one of Bukhara's historic covered trading domes, right in the heart of the old town. Sources differ on its exact age — local guides and travel references date it anywhere from the 14th to the 17th century — but they agree on the essential point: it has been in continuous use and was never rebuilt in a modern style. Modest from the street, it opens inside into domed chambers heated from below.
The ritual follows a slow sequence: a cooler room first, then a warm room, and finally the hot heart of the bath, where you lie on heated stone while the steam works. Bath attendants guide newcomers, show them where to sit and how to use the water, and then offer the famous Bukhara massage — firm, rhythmic and unforgettable. Towels, a wrap-around cloth and sandals are provided, and afterwards guests sit in the changing room over tea.
Practical notes: according to published visitor information, regular men's hours at Bozori Kord are Wednesday to Monday from 7:00 to 15:00, closed on Tuesdays, with evening sessions and women's visits by prior reservation. Hours can change, so we confirm them for every booking.
A women-only hammam near the Kalon Minaret
Bukhara's smaller neighbourhood bathhouses were known as guzar hammams, and some were tucked into street corners — hence the name Kunjak, "the corner hammam". Today the Kunjak hammam near the Kalon Minaret operates for women only, which makes it a favourite for female travellers who want the full experience in a relaxed, private setting. Female masseuses can also be arranged at Bozori Kord in the evenings.
Uzbekistan wellness travel: why autumn is the right moment
The hammam makes most sense when the evenings turn cool. In October and November Bukhara's days are mild and bright, ideal for long walks through the Poi-Kalyan ensemble, the Lyabi-Hauz pool and the trading domes — and a steam bath at the end of the day becomes pure pleasure rather than an escape from the heat.
For travellers from Spain, Bukhara can feel strangely familiar: courtyards, brick vaults, fountains, the culture of water and shade. The hammam is where that feeling becomes physical. Pair it with a stay in an old-town hotel and you have a slow, sensory Silk Road journey rather than a checklist tour. In Bukhara we work with hotels such as Dendi Plaza and Reikartz Modarixon Bukhara.
How to add a Bukhara hammam to your Silk Road tour
A hammam session fits easily into any itinerary that includes Bukhara: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are linked by rail, and two or three nights in Bukhara leave time for the old town, the hammam and an evening by Lyabi-Hauz. Our historical tour through Uzbekistan is a good base, and we can add a reserved hammam evening, a female-only session or a private guide who explains the ritual before you go in.
Citizens of around 90 countries can now enter Uzbekistan visa-free, which makes a spontaneous autumn trip simpler than ever.
GoUzbekistan is a licensed tour operator with offices in Tashkent and Bukhara, operating since 2007. Our Bukhara team knows the hammams, the hours and the etiquette.
