The road out of Samarkand climbs into the Zerafshan mountains, and for forty minutes you see nothing but bare ridges and the odd shepherd. Then the pass drops you into a green valley, and there they are: two brick towers, forty metres of them, standing apart with nothing between but sky. That gap is the point. Everything that once filled it — the greatest palace Timur ever built — is gone.
Shakhrisabz means Green City. Timur was born near here in 1336, and this was the town he tried to make immortal. Most travellers see it from a tour bus window on a day trip and never understand what they were looking at.
Construction began around 1379, after Timur's campaign against Khorezm, and it ran for decades. Ak-Saray was his summer residence and his diplomatic stage — the place where ambassadors were made to feel small before a word was spoken. What survives are the two flanking portals of the entrance arch, well over forty metres tall, their turquoise and cobalt tilework still gripping the brick in patches.
Walk into the space between them and look up. The arch that once spanned this gap was, by most accounts, the largest in the Timurid world. Standing in its absence is a stranger and more powerful experience than standing under an intact dome — you are asked to build the rest yourself.
South along the axial park lie the parts people rush. Kok Gumbaz — the Blue Dome mosque, completed in 1435 under Timur's grandson Ulugbek, the astronomer-king — is the largest mosque in the city and quietly beautiful in late light. The Dorut Tilovat complex holds the tombs of Timurid family and the shaykh who taught his father. At Dorus Saodat you can descend into the crypt Timur had cut for himself. He never lay in it; a winter campaign and a blocked mountain pass sent his body to the Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand instead. The empty chamber is one of the most affecting rooms in Uzbekistan.
The historic centre of Shakhrisabz has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2000.
Uzbekistan welcomed 11.7 million foreign visitors in 2025, and the Tourism Committee expects roughly 12 million in 2026 — it is the fastest-growing destination in Central Asia. Entry has never been simpler: citizens of the United Kingdom, the European Union, and — since 1 January 2026 — the United States travel visa-free, and an e-visa covers most of the rest. Etihad and Uzbekistan Airways now codeshare into eight Uzbek destinations on a single ticket.
Autumn is the season locals quietly recommend. From mid-September into late October, daytime temperatures sit around 18–28°C, the summer glare softens, and the markets fill with grapes, melons and pomegranates. Crucially, Shakhrisabz empties out. The same courtyard that holds forty people at noon in July holds four at ten in the morning in October.
Getting there rewards planning. The fast train brings you to Samarkand in about two hours from Tashkent; from there Shakhrisabz is roughly 90 km over the Takhtakaracha pass — a drive worth doing slowly, with a stop at the pass itself for the view back over the valley.
