The Paper That Left China: Samarkand's Oldest Silk Road Secret

There is a village outside Samarkand where the river still turns a wooden wheel, and a hammer the size of a man's leg falls again and again onto wet mulberry bark. The sound is dull, patient, almost a heartbeat. Stand there long enough on an October morning, with the poplars going gold and the water cold off the Siyob, and you realise you are listening to something that travelled here from China more than twelve centuries ago — and never went home.

This is Konigil, and the thing that travelled was paper.

The Silk Road's most famous secret: how papermaking reached Samarkand

According to the traditional account, the secret crossed Central Asia in the year 751, after the Battle of Talas. Among the prisoners taken were craftsmen who knew how to beat bark and rag into a sheet thin enough to write on. Samarkand, already rich, already brilliant, already the crossroads of the known world, gave them water, mulberry groves and a market. Within a generation the city was producing the finest paper in the Islamic world. From Samarkand it moved to Baghdad, then Cairo, then Córdoba, then to every library in Europe.

Almost everything you have ever read began, in a sense, with a Chinese hand and a Samarkand river.

The craft died out in the nineteenth century. It came back in the 1990s, when a family of Samarkand artisans rebuilt the water-powered mill at Konigil from old descriptions and stubbornness. Today you can stand beside the wheel, peel a strip of mulberry bark yourself, watch the pulp poured and pressed, and walk away with a sheet of golden-brown Samarkand silk paper that will outlive you. Chinese visitors often go very quiet in that workshop. It is one of the few places on earth where you can touch your own country's gift to the world, held safe by someone else's grandchildren.

Under the mutual visa-exemption agreement in force since June 2025, holders of ordinary Chinese passports may enter Uzbekistan without a visa for stays of up to 30 days — no embassy appointment, no paperwork, no queue. Why October is the perfect season for a Samarkand and Silk Road tour

Autumn is Uzbekistan at its kindest. The summer heat has broken, the light turns long and honey-coloured across the tiled domes, and the bazaars fill with the harvest — pomegranates split open on the stall, melons stacked like cannonballs, grapes still warm from the vine. You can climb a minaret in Khiva at midday without suffering for it. You can sit in a Bukhara courtyard at dusk with green tea and not want to be anywhere else.
