The Last Quiet Autumn: Uzbekistan Is Rising Faster Than Almost Anywhere

There is a particular hour in Samarkand in October — around five in the afternoon, when the sun drops low enough to hit the Registan's tilework side-on and the whole square turns the colour of apricot jam. Right now, you can stand in that square and hear your own footsteps.

Enjoy it. That is not going to be true for much longer.

The Numbers Behind Uzbekistan's Tourism Boom

According to UN Tourism data, Uzbekistan ranked among the world's fastest-growing destinations in the first quarter of 2026, with international arrivals up around 37% year on year — roughly 2.87 million visitors between January and March alone, some 770,000 more than the same period a year earlier. By the end of May the country had already passed 5.3 million arrivals. For context, global international tourism grew about 2% over the same window.

That follows a record 2025 of nearly 11.7 million foreign visitors. Uzbekistan is not "emerging" any more. It is arriving — and the quiet version of it has a shelf life.

Why Autumn Is the Best Time to Visit Uzbekistan

September through mid-November is, without much argument, the finest travel window in Central Asia. The brutal summer heat lifts. Mornings turn crisp; afternoons stay warm enough for a courtyard lunch. The pomegranates split open in the bazaars, the last melons of the Ferghana harvest arrive, and the light — the thing photographers actually come here for — goes long and gold across the domes.

It is also the season of the table. Autumn plov made with new-crop rice and yellow carrots, bread pulled straight off the tandoor wall, tea in a chaikhana while somebody's grandfather argues about backgammon. You will eat better in Bukhara in October than you expect to.

Visa-Free Uzbekistan: More Than 90 Countries Now Walk Straight In

The barrier that used to keep people away is simply gone. Citizens of more than ninety countries — including the EU and Schengen states, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Malaysia and China — enter Uzbekistan visa-free. Since 1 January 2026, United States citizens can also enter visa-free for up to 30 days, following a decree signed in November 2025. Gulf travellers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman and Jordan are covered too.

For most of our guests, the entire administrative burden of visiting Uzbekistan is now: book a flight, show a passport.

The Silk Road by High-Speed Train — Tashkent to Samarkand to Bukhara

The other thing that changed is the distance between the good parts. Uzbekistan's Afrosiyob high-speed service covers Tashkent to Samarkand in roughly two hours fifteen minutes and reaches Bukhara in under four; a newer high-speed train, the Jaloliddin Manguberdi, entered service in 2026. A classic Tashkent–Samarkand–Bukhara–Khiva loop that used to mean long days in a minibus is now a sequence of short, comfortable hops with more hours left over for the cities themselves.

One caution: high-season seats on these trains sell out weeks ahead, and the best small hotels inside Bukhara's old town are tiny. Autumn itineraries are built in advance or not at all.
