Samarkand Hosts the 46th Chess Olympiad: 200 Nations on the Silk Road

On a September evening in Samarkand, the Registan’s tiled facades turn the colour of hot honey, and this year something new will happen beneath them: several thousand chess players from roughly 200 nations will be walking home from the board, arguing about a rook endgame in forty different languages. From 15 to 27 September 2026, the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad comes to the Silk Road.

It is the largest team event in world chess, and Uzbekistan — whose young squad shocked the sport by winning gold in 2022 — is hosting it in the most photogenic city on the ancient trade route. For travellers, this is a rare alignment: a global sporting festival, perfect autumn weather, and a country that has quietly become one of the easiest places in Asia to visit.

Samarkand does not need an excuse. Timur’s capital gave the world the Registan ensemble, the ribbed turquoise dome of Gur-e-Amir, the necropolis of Shah-i-Zinda where every step is a different century of tilework, and Ulugh Beg’s fifteenth-century observatory — built by a ruler who was an astronomer first and a king second.

Uzbekistan welcomed 11.7 million foreign visitors in 2025 and the national Tourism Committee is targeting roughly 12 million in 2026.

Getting between cities is just as painless. The Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent and Samarkand in about two hours and continues to Bukhara, so a Silk Road itinerary no longer means long days in a minibus.

Here is the traveller’s secret: September in Uzbekistan rewards anyone who does not stop at Samarkand.
