How many days do you need in Uzbekistan, and in what order should you see the cities? These are the routes our guides recommend after years of running Silk Road tours. Each one can be booked as a private tour on your dates.

How many days in each city?

  • Tashkent: 1 day
  • Samarkand: 2 days
  • Bukhara: 2 days
  • Khiva: 1 day

Uzbekistan in 5 days

  1. Tashkent: Khast Imam complex, Chorsu bazaar, metro stations.
  2. Afrosiyob train to Samarkand: Registan, Gur-e-Amir.
  3. Samarkand: Shah-i-Zinda, Bibi-Khanym, Siab bazaar.
  4. Train to Bukhara: Poi Kalyan, Lyab-i Hauz, trading domes.
  5. Bukhara: Ark fortress, Bolo Hauz, then train back to Tashkent.

Book it as our 5-day Uzbekistan tour.

Uzbekistan in 7 days

Add Khiva to the 5-day route: fly or take the train to Urgench, spend a day inside the walled Itchan Kala, then continue to Bukhara by road through the Kyzylkum desert. See our 7-day historical tour.

Uzbekistan in 10 days

The full Silk Road: Tashkent, Khiva, a night in a desert yurt camp, Bukhara, Shakhrisabz (birthplace of Amir Timur) and Samarkand. It is the most relaxed pace and the best choice for a first trip. See the 10-day Grand Silk Road tour.

2 weeks or more

Add the Fergana Valley and its silk and ceramics workshops, Nukus and the Savitsky Museum, the Aral Sea at Moynaq, or a few days in the Tian Shan mountains. Combining Uzbekistan with Kyrgyzstan is also popular.

Tips for planning

  • Book Afrosiyob train tickets early in spring and autumn.
  • Start in Khiva and finish in Tashkent, or the other way round, to avoid backtracking.
  • Read when to go and how much a trip costs.
