Where the Silk Road Goes Quiet: Autumn Walking in Uzbekistan's Nuratau Mountains

The path out of Sentob climbs past a walnut tree older than any house in the village. Below you: flat roofs the exact colour of the hillside, a stream running loud through a stone channel, a woman spreading apricots to dry. Above you: the bare ridgeline of the Nuratau, and behind it — invisible, enormous — the Kyzylkum desert. There is no engine noise at all. Just water, wind in the leaves, and somebody's donkey.

This is Uzbekistan too. Not the Uzbekistan of turquoise domes and camera-ready madrasahs, but the one that lives half a day's drive north of Samarkand, in a chain of mountain villages where travellers still sleep in family homes because there is nothing else to sleep in. Every autumn, a small, determined group of walkers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland finds its way here — and goes home talking about it for years.

A Silk Road Round Trip That Finally Slows Down

Most Uzbekistan itineraries are a sprint: Tashkent, Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva, home. Magnificent, and exhausting. The Nuratau range is the antidote — a long, low wall of hills separating irrigated farmland from open desert, threaded with footpaths that shepherds have used for centuries and almost no tour buses can reach.

Days here are simple. You walk four to six hours between villages such as Sentob, Asraf, Hayat and Eski Forish, over passes with views that run to the horizon in both directions. You stop where a spring comes out of the rock. Your guide, who grew up in one of these valleys, points out where the trail forks toward a summer pasture. In the afternoon you arrive somewhere with tea already poured.

Nearby, the Sarmish Gorge holds thousands of petroglyphs — hunters, ibex, horsemen — scratched into dark rock over several thousand years. The town of Nurata below the range has a sacred spring complex fed by a fish-filled pool, and the hilltop ruins of a fortress that local tradition connects to Alexander the Great. It is one of the few places in the country where prehistory, Islamic pilgrimage and everyday village life sit within a few kilometres of each other.

Village Homestays: Sustainable Travel With a Real Address

The homestays of the Nuratau are not boutique hotels dressed as farmhouses. They are family courtyards with a guest room, a raised wooden platform for eating outdoors, mulberry trees, and a bathroom that has been built specifically so guests are comfortable. Dinner is what the household eats: bread from the tandoor, tomatoes still warm, hand-cut noodles, and — if you are lucky and hungry — a mountain plov cooked over wood.

For travellers who ask hard questions about where their money goes, the answer here is unusually short. It goes to the household that cooks your dinner, the neighbour who drives the transfer, the guide from the next village, the woman who wove the felt on your floor. Village tourism in the Nuratau exists precisely because it gives mountain families an income that does not require leaving for the city. That is not a marketing line; it is the reason the homestay network was built.

Why Autumn Is the Best Season for an Uzbekistan Hiking Tour

September and October are the range's finest weeks. The summer heat that makes the lowlands hard work has drained away; days settle into clear, dry warmth and nights turn genuinely cool. This is harvest season, so the villages are busy in the best way — walnuts knocked from branches, grapes laid out, apricots and apples pressed and dried. The light in the Nuratau in October is low and gold and makes even a mud-brick wall look composed.

It is also comfortable walking weather everywhere else in the country, which matters if you want to combine the hills with the cities.

How to Combine the Mountains With Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva

The Nuratau sits almost exactly between Samarkand and Bukhara, which makes the logistics unusually kind. A typical shape: arrive in Tashkent, take the Afrosiyob high-speed train to Samarkand in a little over two hours, spend two nights among the Registan and Shah-i-Zinda, then drive north into the hills for two or three days of walking and homestays. From there it is a straightforward road transfer to Bukhara, and onward to Khiva if you have the time.

Getting in has rarely been easier: Uzbekistan is visa-free for citizens of more than 90 countries, including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the rest of the EU and UK, and the internal rail network now links the main Silk Road cities at speed.
