Ninety Minutes from Tashkent, the Silk Road Turns to Mountains

The road out of Tashkent climbs for forty minutes, and then the light changes. Behind you the capital is still flat and warm. Ahead, the Chatkal ridge stands out of the haze like a chapter the Silk Road forgot to mention: walnut forests turning gold, the turquoise sheet of the Charvak reservoir far below, and air suddenly cold enough to need the jacket you almost left at the hotel.

Most travellers know Uzbekistan as three blue cities and a fast train between them. Ninety kilometres from the capital there is a fourth Uzbekistan, and it is made of mountains.

Usbekistan Wanderreise: the Western Tian Shan above Tashkent

The Chimgan massif sits inside Ugam-Chatkal National Park, at the western end of the Tian Shan — the range that UNESCO inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2016 as the Western Tien-Shan, a site shared by Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Greater Chimgan rises to 3,309 metres. Below it run alpine meadows, juniper slopes, shepherd tracks worn smooth by a thousand summers of transhumance, and villages where the bread is still baked in a clay tandir at six in the morning.

Nothing here is staged for visitors. You will pass horsemen moving flocks down to the valley for winter, women drying apricots on flat roofs, and a school bus that doubles as the village taxi. For travellers from Germany, Austria and Switzerland — for whom a Rundreise usually means both culture and boots — this is the half of Uzbekistan that rarely appears in the brochures.

Why September and October are the season

Summer in the lowlands is fierce; in the mountains it is merely bright. But autumn is the quiet prize. The heat has broken, the light lies long and low across the ridges, the trails are dry and the air is clear enough to see three valleys deep. Walnuts and apples come down from the orchards in baskets. The snow has not yet arrived. September and October are, by common agreement among local guides, the best hiking weeks of the Uzbek year — and the trails are close to empty.

The walking suits almost everyone. A half-day route above Beldersay gives you ridgeline views over Charvak with no technical ground at all. A three-day trek through the Chimgan ring covers roughly 36 kilometres with four to eight hours of walking a day, nights in tents or family guesthouses, and dinner cooked over a fire while the stars come out in numbers that startle people who live under European city light.

How the mountains fit a Seidenstrasse Rundreise

You do not have to choose between the monuments and the mountains. Chimgan is a ninety-minute drive from central Tashkent, which makes it the easiest add-on in Uzbek travel: two or three days of walking at the start of a trip, while your body adjusts to the time change, then the high-speed Afrosiyob train to Samarkand in a little over two hours. Registan. Bukhara. Khiva. The desert. The blue domes hit differently when you have already smelled juniper smoke.

Travellers who want more remoteness can extend into the Nuratau hills and sleep in a village homestay above a walnut grove, or push south toward the Zaamin highlands. What it takes to go — and what it does not

Less than you think. Citizens of Germany, Austria and Switzerland travel to Uzbekistan visa-free for up to 30 days; the country now admits more than 90 nationalities without a visa. Your passport needs six months of validity, and your accommodation registers you on arrival — hotels and licensed guesthouses handle that paperwork for you. There is no permit lottery, no crowd quota, no months-long booking window. There is simply a mountain range that almost nobody in Europe has on their list yet.
