Picture a walled city rising from the desert at dawn — minarets glowing amber, the call to prayer drifting over a labyrinth of madrasas, the whole town encircled by ancient ramparts of sun-baked clay. This is Khiva, and after centuries in the shadow of Samarkand and Bukhara, it has just been named one of National Geographic's Best of the World destinations for 2026.
For travelers who want the Silk Road before the crowds find it, the moment is now. Khiva is stepping into the light — and it has never been easier to reach.
Khiva: the world's most complete Silk Road open-air museum
At the heart of Khiva lies Itchan Kala, a UNESCO World Heritage walled inner town so intact that wandering it feels like time travel. Within its ramparts stand the stout, unfinished Kalta Minor minaret in its glaze of turquoise tile, the soaring Islam Khoja complex, palaces, mausoleums and dozens of mosques — all in a few walkable, photogenic blocks. Few places on earth let you step so completely into the medieval Silk Road. At golden hour, when the desert light turns the clay walls to honey, Khiva becomes one of the most romantic sights in all of Central Asia.
A new high-speed era reaches Khiva in 2026
Khiva's long isolation is over. In 2026 Uzbekistan extended its high-speed rail network all the way to the Khorezm region, cutting the Tashkent–Khiva journey from a grueling overnight haul to under eight hours, with comfortable modern trains linking Khiva to Samarkand and Bukhara on a single Silk Road corridor. Nearby Urgench International Airport is being upgraded to handle up to three million passengers a year. Getting to this far-western jewel is now part of the adventure, not an obstacle to it.
Why 2026 is the year to go
Recognition brings change. Khiva is expanding its visitor offering — including the new Arda Khiva complex, with architecture inspired by Itchan Kala, a canal with gondolas and an open-air amphitheater for concerts. Visiting now means experiencing the city as it crosses from hidden gem to global stage. Pair Khiva with Samarkand and Bukhara and you have the complete Silk Road in a single, comfortable loop — and autumn, from September to November, offers the ideal weather: warm, clear days around 21–30°C and cool, starlit desert evenings.
