Can you combine a Silk Road city tour with real wildlife watching in Uzbekistan? Yes: the Jeyran Ecocenter, a protected breeding reserve for goitered gazelles, kulans and Przewalski's horses, lies about 40 km from Bukhara, so a morning in the Kyzylkum Desert fits easily into a classic Bukhara itinerary.
The engine goes quiet, and the first thing you notice is the silence. Saxaul shrubs, pale sand, a wide autumn sky. Then something moves at the edge of the reeds: a small herd of gazelles, ears up, watching you watching them. A few minutes later a group of stocky, sand-coloured horses with dark upright manes crosses the track. These are Przewalski's horses, a wild horse once pushed to the edge of extinction, grazing in the desert only an hour's drive from the blue domes of Bukhara.
The reserve was founded in 1977 and has the status of a protected natural area. According to Uzbekistan's official tourism portal, it now covers around 16,500 hectares in the south-western Kyzylkum, with animals kept in large semi-open enclosures. It sits roughly 40 km from Bukhara along the Bukhara–Karshi road, which makes it one of the easiest nature trips in the whole country.
Its name comes from the jeyran — the goitered gazelle. When the centre was created, a large area of desert was fenced to protect it from poachers, and gazelles were gathered from the Kyzylkum and even from village households, where they had once been kept as ornamental animals alongside peacocks. From that starting point the reserve grew into a breeding centre for many of Central Asia's rarest desert species.
The official portal lists goitered gazelles, kulans (the Asiatic wild ass), Przewalski's horses, Bukhara mountain sheep, markhor goats, long-spined hedgehogs, grey monitor lizards, and birds such as pink pelicans, herons, swans, eagles and falcons. Small lakes inside the reserve are fed by the Amu-Bukhara canal, so there is water in the heart of the desert — and where there is water, there is life.
The experience is quiet and unhurried: a guided drive or walk along the tracks, binoculars, and patience. Early morning and late afternoon bring the softest light for photography and the most activity among the animals. Autumn, when the desert heat has broken, is an ideal season to go.

A practical way to plan it: arrive in Bukhara by train, stay two or three nights, and use one morning for the Jeyran Ecocenter.
