Who was the first Spaniard to describe Samarkand? Ruy González de Clavijo, a Madrid-born envoy of King Henry III of Castile, reached the outskirts of Timur's capital on 4 September 1404 and spent the autumn there — leaving the most detailed contemporary Western account of Timur's court. Six centuries later, you can follow his route in the same golden season, without a visa.
Imagine arriving the way Clavijo did: dusty after sixteen months on the road, the sun dropping behind poplar trees, and suddenly the domes of Samarkand rising out of the orchards. He found a city that was never finished — Timur kept ordering buildings to be torn down and rebuilt grander. Walk the Registan at dusk today and you still feel that ambition in every glazed tile.
Viajes a Uzbekistán with a Spanish story: the embassy to Tamerlane
Clavijo's party set sail from Cádiz on 22 May 1403, stopping in the Balearic Islands, Gaeta and Rhodes before reaching Constantinople. From the Black Sea port of Trebizond they followed Timur overland through Persia, crossing the Amu Darya to Termez and continuing to Kesh — today's Shahrisabz — before reaching Samarkand in September 1404. His diary was published in Spanish in 1582 as Embajada a Tamorlán, and it remains one of the great travel books of the Middle Ages.
What he saw still reads like a dream: a first audience with Timur in "a great orchard with a palace therein", trained elephants, and tent-pavilions of silk encrusted with jewels and pearls, their tassels and banners moving in the wind. The Castilians stayed through the autumn and left on 21 November 1404, travelling on through Bukhara. They finally returned to the Castilian court on 24 March 1406.
Shahrisabz: the palace Clavijo saw under construction
In Kesh, Clavijo passed Timur's Ak-Saray Palace while workers were still building it. Construction had begun in 1380 and lasted until 1404, and Clavijo's account confirms the work was not yet complete when he visited. Today its colossal ruined portal stands at the heart of the Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. Standing beneath it, you are looking at the same stone the Spanish ambassador described — the birthplace of Timur, where he dreamed of a capital to rival Samarkand.
A day trip from Samarkand to Shahrisabz is one of the most rewarding additions to a Silk Road route, and it fits naturally into our historical tour through Uzbekistan.
Samarcanda in autumn: why now is Clavijo's season
Clavijo arrived in September and left in late November — exactly the window many travellers now consider the most comfortable time for Uzbekistan. The summer heat has gone, markets overflow with grapes, pomegranates and melons, and the light on the madrasahs turns soft and amber. It is the ideal season for long walks between Samarkand's monuments, for the train ride on to Bukhara, and for evenings over plov and green tea.
Getting there has never been simpler. Citizens of Spain can visit Uzbekistan visa-free for up to 30 days, and citizens of around 90 countries now enjoy visa-free entry. If you want to focus on the city where Clavijo met Timur, our Samarkand 3-day tour covers the essentials at an unhurried pace.

GoUzbekistan is a licensed tour operator with offices in Tashkent and Bukhara, operating since 2007. We can build a route that traces Clavijo's path — Termez, Shahrisabz, Samarkand and Bukhara — with Spanish-speaking guides on request, comfortable hotels and rail connections between the cities.
Six hundred years ago, a traveller from Madrid needed three years to reach Samarkand and return. Today the same Silk Road is a few hours' flight away.
