The Ziyarat Road of Termez: Imam at-Tirmidhi and the Sayyids of Sultan Saodat

Where in Uzbekistan can you visit the resting place of Imam at-Tirmidhi? In Sherabad district of Surkhandarya region, in the far south near Termez, where his 11th–12th century mausoleum stands, a short drive from the Sultan Saodat complex of the Sayyids of Termez and the shrine of the Sufi sage al-Hakim at-Tirmidhi.

Most travellers who come to Uzbekistan for its Islamic heritage stop at Samarkand and Bukhara. Few continue south, to the warm plains where the Amu Darya, the river the Arab geographers called Jayhun, marks the edge of the old Islamic world of Mawarannahr. Yet this is where the name at-Tirmidhi was born, a name known to every student of hadith from Makkah to Kuala Lumpur. Standing in the quiet courtyard at dawn, with the call to prayer drifting over brick domes, you understand why scholars once crossed deserts to reach Termez.

Imam at-Tirmidhi: a hadith master's mausoleum in Sherabad

Imam at-Tirmidhi lived from 824 to 892 and is counted among the six great compilers of hadith whose collections are read across the Islamic world. His mausoleum in Sherabad district is an architectural monument of the 11th–12th centuries, according to the Organization of Turkic States, which agreed with Uzbekistan's Tourism Committee to include the site in its joint Tabarruk Ziyarat pilgrimage tourism project. For visitors from the Gulf, this is one of the most meaningful ziyarat stops in Central Asia, and still one of the least crowded.

Sultan Saodat: the Sayyids of Termez

About 3 km north-east of Termez lies the Sultan Saodat complex, formed between the 9th and 17th centuries. It holds the graves of the Termez Sayyids, an influential dynasty that played a major role in the history of Mawarannahr and Khorasan and traced its lineage to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Rows of domed mausoleums of baked brick face each other across a long courtyard, built over eight centuries, and walking between them feels like reading a family history written in architecture. Sultan Saodat is the second site included in the same Tabarruk Ziyarat project.

Al-Hakim at-Tirmidhi: the sage of Termez

The third pillar of a Termez ziyarat is the mausoleum of Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Hakim at-Tirmidhi, a Sufi scholar and thinker, described as the most revered religious site in the city. It stands north-west of the ancient Termez fortress. A new mausoleum was added in 1389–1390, as an inscription on its portal records, and in the early 15th century a carved white-marble gravestone was placed over the saint's grave. Between 1405 and 1409, under Khalil Sultan, grandson of Amir Temur, a large khanaqah was built to host travellers, dervishes and scholars. The complex also includes a mosque, a guesthouse and cells for pilgrims.

Islamic heritage tour of Uzbekistan: how to add Termez

Termez is linked to Tashkent by direct domestic flights, so the south can be added to a classic route without long road transfers. A balanced itinerary for families and groups from the Gulf combines Tashkent and its Islamic heritage sites, Samarkand with the shrine of Imam al-Bukhari, Bukhara and its ziyarat road, and two days in Termez. Interest in Uzbekistan keeps growing: the country welcomed 10.3 million foreign tourists in January–September 2026, up 20.4% year on year, according to the Tourism Committee. Citizens of around 90 countries can enter visa-free; please check the current rules for your passport before booking.
