Bukhara for Spanish Travellers: The Silk Road City That Echoes Al-Andalus

Close your eyes in the courtyard of the Poi-Kalyan complex at dusk, and for a moment you could be standing in the Mezquita of Córdoba. The same geometry of faith, the same amber light on ancient brick, the same hush before the muezzin's call. But this is Bukhara — Bujará — 5,000 kilometres east, where the Silk Road still breathes and the past is not behind glass but underfoot.

For Spanish travellers raised among the arches of Granada and the patios of Sevilla, Uzbekistan offers a startling homecoming: the living continuation of the Islamic golden age that once flowered in Al-Andalus. Here, that world never became a museum. It became a neighbourhood.

Bukhara: la Córdoba de la Ruta de la Seda

Bukhara wears its 2,500 years lightly. More than 140 protected monuments crowd its old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site you can cross on foot in an afternoon. The Kalyan Minaret — so magnificent that Genghis Khan reportedly spared it — has guided caravans for nine centuries. Beneath it, artisans still hammer copper, weave silk, and stitch the gold embroidery (zarduzi) that once adorned emirs. The scent of spices and fresh non bread drifts from the covered bazaars where merchants have bargained since the Middle Ages.

Spanish visitors often describe a peculiar déjà vu — the intricate azulejo-like tilework, the shaded courtyards built around water, the poetry carved into stone. It is the shared inheritance of a civilisation that stretched from the Guadalquivir to the Zarafshan, and in Bukhara you can walk straight into it.

Samarcanda, Jiva y el corazón de Uzbekistán

Bukhara is the soul, but it is not alone. Two hours east by high-speed Afrosiyob train lies Samarkand, whose Registan Square — three towering madrasas facing a single plaza — is among the most breathtaking sights on earth. West lies Khiva, a walled desert city so complete it feels like a stage set left running for 1,000 years. Together they form the classic Ruta de la Seda circuit, and Uzbekistan's modern railways stitch them together in comfort.

Why 2026 is the year to go

There has never been an easier moment for Spanish travellers to reach the Silk Road. Uzbekistan is now visa-free for citizens of dozens of countries, including Spain and most of the EU, for stays of up to 30 days — no paperwork, no queues. Foreign arrivals surpassed 11 million in 2025 and continue to climb in 2026, yet Bukhara remains gloriously uncrowded compared with Europe's overrun classics. Samarkand was recently celebrated as a "City of the Year" by international travel media, and new flight connections are bringing Central Asia within comfortable reach.

Travel with people who know the road

GoUzbekistan is a licensed Uzbek tour operator based in Bukhara itself, on Islam Karimov Street — not a distant call centre, but locals who grew up beneath these minarets. Operating since 2007, our team crafts journeys that go beyond the monuments: a private dinner in a restored merchant's house, a dawn visit to the Kalyan mosque before the crowds, an afternoon learning the knots of a Bukhara carpet from a master weaver.

Whether you dream of a slow, sensory week in Bukhara or a grand Silk Road loop through Samarkand and Khiva, we build it around you. Create your own custom tour or explore our tours and let the road that once linked Córdoba to Cathay carry you east.
