Tashkent Just Joined the UNESCO List: The Silk Road Capital Everyone Flies Through

For decades the advice about Tashkent was the same: land, sleep, leave. Get to Samarkand. The capital was the airport you passed through on the way to the blue domes, a wide grid of boulevards and concrete that nobody had told you how to read. In July 2026, UNESCO ended that argument.

Meeting in Busan, Republic of Korea, the World Heritage Committee inscribed ten buildings of the Uzbek capital on the World Heritage List under the title "Tashkent Modernist Architecture: Modernity and Tradition in Central Asia". The Silk Road city everyone flies through is now, officially, a destination.

Ten Buildings, One Decision: What UNESCO Actually Recognised

The inscribed ensemble covers structures built between the 1960s and the early 1990s, and it was recognised under criterion IV - as an outstanding example of a type of building and architectural ensemble that illustrates a significant stage in human history. What UNESCO singled out was not the concrete itself but the argument the concrete makes: architects working here took an international modernist language and bent it to Central Asia. Sun-breakers derived from carved panjara screens. Facades that behave like traditional shaded courtyards in 40-degree heat. Structures engineered for a seismic city that had been flattened by the earthquake of 1966 and rebuilt, at speed, by builders from across the whole Soviet Union.

That is why Tashkent looks the way it does. It is not a city that forgot its history. It is a city that had to be rebuilt in a single decade and chose to argue with the blueprint.

The Metro That Was a Secret for 41 Years

The most extraordinary of the inscribed sites is underground. Kosmonavtlar station is part of the Tashkent Metro, which opened on 6 November 1977 as the first metro system in Central Asia. Because it doubled as a strategic civil-defence shelter, photography inside it was banned - completely - for 41 years. The ban was lifted on 31 May 2018, and within months the stations were on the front of international travel magazines.

They deserved it. Kosmonavtlar is a cosmic corridor in dark blue ceramic, hung with medallions of astronomers and cosmonauts. Others are marble halls of hammered copper, alabaster stalactite vaults, mosaics of cotton bolls, and chandeliers that belong in an opera house. It costs the price of a single ride to walk through a museum that is still, every morning, a working commuter line full of people going to the office.

Where Modernism Meets the Silk Road

The pleasure of Tashkent is the collision. In one morning you can stand under the blue ribbed dome of Chorsu Bazaar while a woman weighs sun-dried apricots into a paper cone; walk ten minutes to the Hazrati Imam complex, where one of the world's oldest Qurans is kept; and be back underground by lunchtime beneath a ceiling of Soviet space-age mosaic. Above ground, plane trees make green tunnels of the boulevards and the chaikhanas fill with plov before noon, because in Tashkent plov is lunch, never dinner.

The city is also where every Uzbekistan itinerary is quietly decided. Fast trains fan out from here to Samarkand in a little over two hours, to Bukhara, and onward to Khiva. Uzbekistan is visa-free for citizens of more than 90 countries, and the country welcomed 2,872,502 foreign visitors in the first quarter of 2026 alone - up 36.6 percent year on year. The trains fill earlier every season.

How to Add Tashkent to Your Uzbekistan Itinerary

Two nights is the honest answer - one at the start and one at the end, so the city bookends the Silk Road rather than competing with it. Ride at least four metro lines with someone who can tell you what the mosaics mean. Eat plov where the cauldron is emptied by one o'clock. Then take the morning train east and let Samarkand do what Samarkand does.
