Oltin Kuz: Uzbekistan Golden Autumn Is the Silk Road Best Kept Season

There is a week in late September when the air over Bukhara changes. The white heat of summer lifts overnight, the mulberry trees along the Lyabi-Hauz pool turn the colour of old brass, and the vendors at the bazaar start stacking pomegranates in pyramids so red they look lit from inside. Uzbeks have a name for this: Oltin Kuz — golden autumn.

Most first-time visitors book Uzbekistan for spring. The ones who come back come back in autumn.

The best time to visit Uzbekistan — September, October, November

The numbers make the case on their own. From September through November, daytime temperatures across Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara settle into a comfortable 21–30°C, with dry air and cloudless skies. Compare that to a July afternoon in the desert and the difference is not a matter of preference — it is the difference between enduring a monument and actually seeing it.

October is the sweet spot. Mornings are crisp, afternoons are warm, and the low sun does something extraordinary to turquoise tilework. Photographers know it; the light on the Registan at 5 p.m. in October is the reason half of Uzbekistan's most-shared images exist. September is busier — it is peak season for a reason — so if you want the great courtyards to yourself, aim for the second half of October or early November.

Harvest season on the Silk Road: pomegranates, melons and plov

Autumn in Uzbekistan is a food story before it is anything else. This is the season the whole agricultural year has been building toward. Grapes and the last of the legendary Khorezm melons in September; pomegranates from Surkhandarya and persimmons in October, pressed into juice in front of you at the bazaar; walnuts, quinces and the first cold-weather plov as the evenings sharpen.

Every Uzbek family cooks differently, and autumn is when you taste the difference — plov made with new-season rice and yellow carrots, samsa from a clay tandoor, non bread stamped and baked in the morning and still warm at noon. Our own operation in Bukhara includes three catering brigades, so we are unusually opinionated about where our travellers eat.

Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva without the crowds

Autumn buys you space. The tour-bus crush of spring thins out, and the places that matter most — Shah-i-Zinda's corridor of tombs, the Poi Kalyan ensemble at dusk, the walled city of Itchan Kala in Khiva — become quiet enough to hear. That is not a small thing. These are working places of prayer, craft and trade, not exhibits, and they read entirely differently when you are not queuing.

Getting between them is easy. The Afrosiyob high-speed train, Talgo-built and capable of 250 km/h, connects Tashkent to Samarkand in about two hours and runs on to Bukhara. Uzbekistan is now visa-free for citizens of more than 90 countries, including the EU, the UK, Gulf states and, since 2026, the United States — for most travellers the paperwork is simply gone.

The catch with a great season is that everyone eventually discovers it. UN Tourism's World Tourism Barometer ranked Uzbekistan among the world's five fastest-growing countries for international arrivals in January–March 2026, and the good boutique hotels inside Bukhara's old town and Samarkand's centre are small. Autumn rooms and Afrosiyob seats — which regularly sell out — are worth locking in weeks ahead, not days.
