Samarcanda es una de las ciudades más antiguas del mundo y fue la capital del imperio de Amir Timur (Tamerlán). Es Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO desde 2001.
Aquí se encuentran algunas de las obras maestras de la arquitectura islámica: la plaza del Registán con sus tres madrasas, la necrópolis de Shah-i-Zinda, la mezquita de Bibi-Khanym, el mausoleo Gur-e-Amir y el observatorio de Ulugbek.
Samarcanda está a unas 2 horas de Taskent en el tren de alta velocidad Afrosiyob, y es la base ideal para excursiones a Shahrisabz y a las montañas de los alrededores.
