Jiva fue la capital del janato de Jorezm y conserva una de las ciudades históricas más completas de Asia Central. Su ciudad interior, Itchan Kala, rodeada de murallas de adobe, fue el primer lugar de Uzbekistán inscrito en la UNESCO, en 1990.
Dentro de las murallas se concentran Kunya-Ark, el minarete inacabado Kalta Minor, la mezquita Juma con sus columnas de madera tallada y el minarete de Islam Khoja, desde el que se ve toda la ciudad.
Dormir dentro de Itchan Kala permite pasear por sus calles cuando se han ido los grupos y ver el atardecer desde las murallas. El aeropuerto más cercano es Urgench, a unos 30 minutos en coche.
