The Other Alhambra: Why Spain Prepares You for Samarkand

There is a moment in the Registan, late on an October afternoon, when the sun drops behind Ulugh Beg's minaret and the whole square turns the colour of apricot skin. If you have ever stood in the courtyards of the Alhambra, something odd happens to you right then. You have seen this handwriting before. Not the building — the thinking. The same restless geometry, the same refusal to leave any surface unsung, the same conviction that mathematics and devotion are one act.

Granada taught you the alphabet. Samarkand is where the sentence runs on for a kilometre.

From the Alhambra to the Registan: the Ruta de la Seda Spanish travellers already half-know

Nasrid Andalusia and Timurid Central Asia were two flowerings of the same Islamic decorative tradition, separated by five thousand kilometres and roughly a century. In Granada the genius went into carved stucco, honeycombed muqarnas and water. In Samarkand it went into glazed tile — cobalt, turquoise, manganese — thrown across facades the size of cliff faces.

The Registan is three madrasas facing one another across an open square, which is a sentence that tells you nothing until you are standing in it. Shah-i-Zinda is the one that undoes people: a narrow corridor of tombs, each doorway tiled by a different master across two hundred years, so that walking it is like walking through an argument about beauty conducted in ceramic. Gur-e-Amir holds Timur himself beneath a slab of dark green stone. Bibi-Khanym, built too big and too fast, is magnificent precisely because it failed.

Golden autumn: the six weeks Uzbekistan quietly keeps for itself

Uzbeks call it Oltin Kuz — golden autumn — and it is not marketing. October days settle around 18 to 22°C. The summer heat that flattens the Kyzylkum is gone, and the light goes low and amber, doing to the turquoise domes exactly what late October does to the sierras above Granada.

The bazaars are at their best: melons stacked in pyramids, apricots drying on rooftops, pomegranates split open on the counter so you can see they are worth buying. Hotel rates sit well below the summer peak. The madrasa courtyards that are elbow-to-elbow in high season give you back your own footsteps.

Viajes a Uzbekistán: simpler than most Spanish travellers expect

Spanish citizens — like nationals of most European Union countries and more than ninety countries in total — enter Uzbekistan without a visa for stays of up to thirty days. No consulate queue, no paperwork, no fee.

Getting between the cities is the part that surprises people. The Afrosiyob high-speed train links Tashkent to Samarkand in roughly two hours and continues to Bukhara. Uzbekistan's airports handled 8.15 million passengers in the first half of 2026, about 16 percent more than the same period a year earlier, and new international routes keep opening — a country that is being discovered in real time rather than one that has already been.

What a first Silk Road trip should actually look like

Eight to ten days is the shape that works. Tashkent to land and adjust. Samarkand for the monuments that justify the flight. Bukhara for the slow days — a compact old town of trading domes, a pond surrounded by mulberry trees, and the one minaret Genghis Khan is said to have refused to destroy. Khiva if you want the walled city entire, still inside its own gates.
