Where the Wine Route Crosses the Silk Road: Uzbekistan Golden Harvest Season

It is early October in the Zarafshan valley, and the air smells of crushed grapes and woodsmoke. Along the road to Samarkand, families sit under vine trellises heavy with fruit; in the bazaar, pomegranates split open like something illuminated from inside. Nobody tells you this about Uzbekistan before you come — that the Silk Road has a harvest season, and that it may be the most delicious month of the entire year to be here.

The Route de la Soie is famous for its architecture. Come in autumn and you discover it is also a table.

A wine country hiding on the Silk Road

Grapes have been cultivated in the Zarafshan valley since antiquity — long before the madrasas of Samarkand were raised. Under Uzbekistan's near-relentless sunshine, the fruit ripens to an unusually high sugar content, which is precisely what winemakers have prized here for generations.

In Samarkand, the story has a specific address. In 1868 the Russian merchant Dmitry Filatov opened the city's first winery; the enterprise later took the name of Mikhail Khovrenko, the oenologist who selected new grape varieties and built the classification system that shaped Uzbek winemaking. More than 150 years on, the Museum of Winemaking occupies Filatov's late-nineteenth-century house, and the tasting room pours dessert wines and cognacs you will find nowhere else on earth. For French travellers accustomed to the codified world of appellations, it is a genuine surprise: an entire wine tradition running on a parallel track to your own.

Voyage Ouzbékistan: the autumn table, city by city

Every Silk Road city cooks differently, and autumn is when the difference is loudest.

In Samarkand, plov arrives pale gold and delicate, threaded with saffron and yellow carrot. In Bukhara, the food turns richer and slower — lamb, quince, dried apricot, dishes that taste of the desert winter to come. In Khiva, inside the walls of the Ichan-Kala, you eat noodles rolled by hand in courtyards that have not changed shape in three centuries. In the Fergana valley, the orchards give up apples, figs and grapes by the crate.

And everywhere: bread. Uzbek non is baked against the wall of a clay tandoor, stamped with a wooden seal, and carried home still warm. It is the most ordinary thing in the country and the thing travellers photograph most.

Why autumn is the season French travellers should book

Uzbekistan is in the middle of a record year: roughly 6.56 million international visitors in the first half of 2026, close to 25% up on last year, after a first quarter that grew more than 36%. Access has never been easier — citizens of more than 90 countries, France, Belgium, Switzerland and Canada among them, enter visa-free for tourism.

The practical case for September to early November is simple. Summer here is severe: July and August routinely exceed 40°C in Bukhara and Khiva, which is punishing when your day is spent walking through open courtyards. By late September the heat has broken — mornings are crisp, afternoons settle around 20-25°C, and the light on tiled domes turns the colour of honey. It is also harvest, which means the bazaars are at their absolute peak.

The catch: everyone who knows this books early. Autumn is the shortest and most contested season in the Uzbek calendar.

Build your gastronomic Silk Road with a licensed operator

A food-led itinerary lives or dies on access — the right family kitchen, the right tandoor at the right hour, the winery that opens its cellar rather than just its gift shop. That is ground-operator work.

GoUzbekistan is the brand of Lochin Express Plyus LLC, based at Islam Karimov Street 21 in Bukhara and operating in tourism since 2007. We hold tour-operator and domestic tourism licence No. 662280, issued on 13 March 2025 by the Committee for Tourism Development of the Republic of Uzbekistan, with Travelife sustainability certification in progress. In Bukhara we run our own 500-capacity event venue, the 29-room Dendi Plaza Hotel, and three catering brigades — so when we promise you a table, it is our own team setting it.

Create your own custom tour and tell us how you like to travel — slowly, hungrily, off the main road. Or explore our tours and find your autumn on the Silk Road.
