The Desert Museum: Nukus and the Forbidden Art of the Soviet Avant-Garde

The road north out of Urgench runs flat and pale for two hours, past cotton fields and the wide grey braid of the Amu Darya, until the desert simply takes over. Nothing on that horizon prepares you for what is waiting at the end of it: a cool, quiet gallery in the Karakalpak city of Nukus where the banned art of the twentieth century hangs on the wall, rescued by one stubborn man who hid it in the sand.

Travellers who came to Uzbekistan for turquoise domes leave talking about this room. It is the strangest, most moving hour on the whole Silk Road, and almost nobody outside the art world knows it is there.

Nukus and the man who saved a forbidden avant-garde

Igor Savitsky was a painter from Kyiv who first reached Karakalpakstan in 1950 with an archaeological expedition into ancient Khorezm and never really left. He collected Karakalpak jewellery, embroidery and carpets first. Then, from the 1960s, he began quietly buying and carrying west-to-east the canvases of artists whom Soviet cultural policy had erased — painters who had been exiled, imprisoned, or simply written out of every catalogue. He founded the museum in Nukus in 1966 and ran it until his death in 1984.

His argument was disarmingly simple: nobody in Moscow was watching a museum in the Kyzylkum desert. Works that could not have hung in Leningrad hung here instead, twenty-five hundred kilometres from the people who had forbidden them. The collection that survives is widely described by curators and journalists as the second-largest holding of Russian avant-garde art anywhere in the world, and the story has carried far beyond Central Asia — it is the subject of the documentary The Desert of Forbidden Art.

Inside the Savitsky Museum: what you actually see

The Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named after I. V. Savitsky now holds on the order of one hundred thousand items across three collections: twentieth-century painting and graphics, Karakalpak folk art, and the archaeology of ancient Khorezm. Only a fraction can be shown at once, so the hang rotates — which is exactly why repeat visitors keep coming back.

Expect canvases that feel impossible in this location: dreamlike Turkestan modernism, cotton-field workers rendered in colours no five-year plan ever approved, portraits with the sitters staring back at you across a censorship that no longer exists. Then walk one room further and you are among Karakalpak yurt bands, silver amulets and the terracotta of a civilisation that irrigated this desert two thousand years ago. Two hours is the minimum. Serious art travellers give it a full day and stay the night.

Nukus is also your gateway to the Aral Sea and the desert fortresses

The museum is the reason to come, but it is not the only one. From Nukus the road runs north to Moynaq, the fishing port that lost its sea, where rusting trawlers now sit on sand and a memorial platform looks out over what the Aral once covered. South and east lie the Elliq Qala — the mud-brick desert castles of ancient Khorezm, Ayaz Qala and Toprak Qala among them, standing on bare ridges with the wind coming off the Kyzylkum. Sunset up there is the photograph people frame when they get home.

Come in the golden autumn

Karakalpakstan is a desert, and autumn is its kindest season. September and October bring dry, mild days, low light that flatters mud brick, and bazaars piled with melons, figs and pomegranates. It is also Uzbekistan busiest year on record: the country welcomed more than six and a half million foreign visitors in the first half of 2026 alone, up roughly a quarter year on year. Rooms in Khiva and Nukus for the autumn window are booked early, and they go.
