Termez: The Buddhist Silk Road That French Archaeologists Brought Back

Stand on the escarpment at Kara Tepe, at the far southern edge of Uzbekistan, and the country you thought you were visiting disappears. No turquoise domes. No tiled madrasas. Just ochre cliffs, a hot wind off the Amu Darya, and a honeycomb of chambers cut into the rock where Buddhist monks lived, copied manuscripts and prayed roughly nineteen centuries ago - long before Islam reached this river, long before Timur was born, when this was Bactria and the road ran to India.

Almost nobody comes here. That is not a marketing line; it is a scheduling fact. Most Uzbekistan itineraries stop at Samarkand and turn north. Termez sits eight hours south of it, on the Afghan border, and it holds the deepest layer of the entire Silk Road story.

Bactria, Alexander, and the road that went to India

Old Termez was already a city in the middle of the first millennium BC. Alexander the Great crossed this region on his way east; Greek soldiers stayed, married, and left behind a civilisation that art historians still call Greco-Buddhist - Hellenistic drapery on Buddhist figures, Corinthian capitals in monastery courtyards. The Kushan empire made Termez a hinge between India and Central Asia, and Buddhism travelled north through it toward China.

What survives is not a museum reconstruction. Fayaz Tepe, a monastery complex with its stupa sheltered under a modern dome. Kara Tepe, cave sanctuaries in the cliff. Zurmala, a lonely brick tower that was once a Kushan stupa, standing in a field like a mistake. You can put your hand on all of it.

A French thread through Uzbek soil

For French-speaking travellers there is a particular reason this place should feel personal. The Mission archeologique franco-ouzbeque de Bactriane septentrionale - MAFOuz - began excavating at Termez in 1993 under the direction of Pierre Leriche and his Uzbek counterpart Shakir Pidaev, working the citadel, the Tchingiz Tepe enclosure and the lower town. Three decades of Franco-Uzbek fieldwork turned a scatter of mounds into a legible ancient city, and much of the recent work has gone into publishing and museum display rather than digging.

It means that when you walk Old Termez with a good guide, you are walking a site that French and Uzbek scholars read together, stone by stone. The Termez Archaeological Museum in the modern city gathers the finds: Buddha heads, Kushan coins, Bactrian inscriptions, ossuaries. It is one of the most rewarding hours in the country and one of the least visited.

And then the other Termez: Sufi, Islamic, still living

The city did not stop when the monasteries did. Al-Hakim at-Termizi, the ninth-century Sufi thinker, is buried here beneath a serene white complex on the riverbank, and pilgrims still arrive quietly all day. The Sultan Saodat ensemble - a long avenue of medieval mausoleums for the descendants of the Prophet's line - is one of the most atmospheric places in Uzbekistan precisely because there is no crowd to break the silence.

This is what makes Termez extraordinary: within thirty kilometres you can move from a Buddhist cave monastery to a Sufi shrine to a border river with Afghanistan on the far bank, and the whole sequence explains how the Silk Road actually worked.

How to add southern Uzbekistan to a Silk Road itinerary

Termez is reached by a short domestic flight from Tashkent, or overland from Samarkand through Shahrisabz and the Boysun mountains - which is the better route, because the drive is half the experience. Autumn is the right season: the southern heat has finally released its grip, and October days here are warm and clear.

Citizens of more than ninety countries, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the rest of the EU among them, enter Uzbekistan visa-free for up to thirty days. High-speed Afrosiyob trains handle the Tashkent-Samarkand-Bukhara spine, so adding three days in the south costs you less time than you expect.
